A Whole-Building Approach to Mold Remediation

Mold rarely stays where it first appears. By the time growth becomes visible on a wall, windowsill or other surface, microscopic spores may already have traveled through the building via HVAC systems and natural airflow. What looks like a localized problem can extend well beyond the visible growth, with spores reaching other areas where moisture can support further growth.

Pure Maintenance treats remediation from that whole-building perspective. Its VaPURE™ process takes a whole-building approach by evaluating conditions beyond the area of visible mold and applying products only to eligible sites and surfaces in accordance with their EPA-approved labeling.

The first step is a mold treatment that reduces the number of mold spores. The second step may include application of an EPA-registered antimicrobial product to eligible surfaces. When applied according to its EPA-approved label, the treatment forms an invisible microbiostatic coating that helps inhibit the growth of mold and mildew on treated surfaces.

Many treatments can be completed within several hours, depending on the building’s size and condition. When appropriate, post-treatment testing may be used to evaluate indoor mold-spore levels against an outdoor reference sample. Results vary, and no specific outcome is guaranteed.

The antimicrobial treatment may be applied to eligible moisture-prone surfaces, including certain window sills and other specifically authorized surfaces, strictly in accordance with the product’s EPA-approved label.

Pure Maintenance has expanded its patent portfolio, with another patent pending for new technology.

Why Treating the Room Isn’t Enough

Conventional remediation typically isolates the affected area, removes contaminated materials, rebuilds the space and uses air scrubbers within the containment. While this can restore the immediate area, it may not address spores that have already moved beyond the containment.

The concern is not limited to visible damage. Mold conditions can affect indoor environmental quality and should be evaluated based on the conditions present in the building. Pure Maintenance does not diagnose, treat or prevent medical conditions, and individuals with health concerns should consult a qualified healthcare professional.

A project at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, illustrates the difference. A mess hall had become so heavily affected by mold that demolition was being considered. The growth was so extensive that plastic leather chairs appeared suede and the walls looked textured. Traditional remediation was expected to cost more than demolishing and rebuilding the facility.

Pure Maintenance completed its treatment work in approximately six hours. According to project-specific sampling performed afterward, measured airborne mold-spore levels declined during the follow-up period. This example reflects one project and does not guarantee comparable results in other buildings.

Scaling Remediation Without Losing Consistency

Pure Maintenance is now extending that approach across a growing network. All new locations operate as full-fledged franchises, with the company also expanding into Canada.

Franchise owners and their employees receive online training and hands-on instruction through a boot camp at the company’s Utah headquarters, where the company provides extensive training on the VaPURE™ process and how mold works. Licensing contracts and franchise agreements also include requirements for further education.

It has also partnered with the National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors (NORMI), which supports the training of Pure Maintenance owners.

The network now spans more than 200 locations worldwide and has an average Google rating above 4.9, with more than 3,000 five-star reviews. It has also strengthened compliance training covering FIFRA law, marketing claims, treatment safety and EPA requirements. Pure Maintenance and its chemical partners continue to conduct testing and pursue regulatory review of potential label amendments. No new pesticidal claims will be used unless and until authorized by EPA and other applicable regulators.

The franchise model is continuing to expand, with planned locations in Dubai and additional U.S. cities. The next phase will take that whole-building approach into new markets while holding the company to the same standards that set it apart.
